The program provides students with a thorough grounding in the principles and techniques used by intelligent systems both natural and artificial. It emphasizes the study of existing systems (e.g., perception; linguistics), the design of new ones (e.g., machine vision; machine intelligence), and the design of interfaces between different forms of intelligent agents (e.g., human-computer interfaces).

Through our study of computer science, linguistics, philosophy, and psychology, we aim to gain a comprehensive understanding of human cognition, and to apply this knowledge to create intelligent artificial systems.

The Cognitive Systems program is designed to introduce students to the issues and approaches associated with the study of the mind and other intelligent systems, specifically as they relate to problems concerning cognition, computation, information, language, perception, and rationality.
These issues are as old as our first attempts to explain the relationship between the mind and the brain, knowledge and reality, or reasoning and truth. These issues are also as new as the latest developments in machine learning, expert systems and robotics, and approaches to the study of intelligence.
The Program establishes the theoretical connection between human and machine intelligence and the consequences of discovering such connections.
The UBC Cognitive Systems program provides students with the opportunity to have detailed, practical work in at least one area of concentration while providing students with both breadth and integration through the five core courses regardless of stream.
