2023W TA Applications are OPEN

The Cognitive Systems Program seeks to fill a number of Undergraduate Teaching Assistant I (UTA I) positions for the 2023/24 Winter academic sessions. These positions are conditional on the COGS Program’s budgetary approval. Some may be appointed at 50% (half-time), with duties and salaries reduced accordingly. Please note, at the time of application, if you are willing to be considered for a half-time position.

Qualifications: The successful candidates must have successfully completed the course(s) for which they are applying to TA; be able to take direction and then work independently; demonstrate organization and proficiency in managing multiple, complex tasks, some of which will be time-sensitive; communicate in timely and effective ways with students, instructors, and COGS staff; undertake all responsibilities with integrity and professionalism, including working with student data.

Duties: Participate in training and orientation sessions; mark student work (assignments, exams, etc.) and enter grades in Canvas; attend lectures (face-to-face or virtual as required) and help to manage chat/discussions; hold office hours as required; run lab sections (for COGS 300); respond to student emails and questions in a timely manner; report issues observed during regular activities, such as academic misconduct, problems with assignments or students struggling with course material; invigilate final exam(s) as required; and meet with the instructor and TAs regularly to ensure collegial and functional communication.

Number of positions available: ~18 across four courses (COGS 200, COGS 300, COGS 303, COGS 401)

Wage: $4,371.32 per term for UTA I. Sections run on a term basis from either September to December (Term 1) or January to April (Term 2).

Hours of work: 192 hours over the course of the term for a full (100% or 1.00 FTE) TA position (at an expected rate of approximately 12 hours per week). 50% of this for a half time (50% or 0.50 FTE) position.

How to apply:

  1. Take a look at the COGS TA one-pager to see if the COGS Program’s philosophy matches yours and to get a rough idea on how a COGS TA-ship works
  2. Have your resume or CV ready
  3. Apply here: https://cogs.air.arts.ubc.ca/ta-application-form (log in with your CWL). The form has a section for uploading your resume/CV

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for a discussion regarding your eligibility, interests, skills/experience, course scheduling and availability.

Conditions of employment are governed by the collective agreement between CUPE 2278 and the University of British Columbia. The hard deadline for applications is April 30, 2023.
