The Cognitive Systems Program seeks to fill a number of Undergraduate Teaching Assistant I (UTA I) positions for the 2025/26 Winter academic sessions. These positions are conditional on the COGS Program’s budgetary approval. Some may be appointed at 50% (half-time), with duties and salaries reduced accordingly. Please note, at the time of application, if you are willing to be considered for a half-time position.
Qualifications:
- Has successfully completed the course(s) for which you are applying to TA
- Is able to work independently to complete duties as-defined by the instructor
- Demonstrates organization and proficiency in managing multiple, complex tasks, some of which will be time-sensitive
- Can communicate in a timely and effective manner with students, instructors, and COGS staff
- Will undertake all responsibilities with integrity and professionalism, including working with student data
Duties:
- Participate in training and orientation sessions (including CUPE 2278 union orientation)
- Attend lectures (face-to-face or virtual as required) and help to manage chat/discussions
- Hold office hours as required
- Mark student work (assignments, exams, etc.) and enter grades in Canvas
- Run lab sections (for COGS 300)
- Respond to student emails and questions in a timely manner
- Report issues observed during regular activities, such as academic misconduct, problems with assignments or students struggling with course material
- Invigilate final exam(s) as required
- Meet with the instructor and TAs regularly to ensure collegial and functional communication
Number of positions available: ~18 across four courses (COGS 200, COGS 300, COGS 303, COGS 401)
Length of appointment: Sections run on a term basis from either September 1 to December 31 (Term 1) or January 1 to April 30 (Term 2). Please note that TAs must be available for the entire duration of these terms, regardless of when classes begin and end, to afford time for planning and marking final exams/projects.
Wage: As of September, 2024, UTA I wages are $4921.72/term ($1230.43/month for a 4-month term). See CUPE 2278 Salary Scales here.
Hours of work: 192 hours over the course of the term for a full (100% or 1.00 FTE) TA position (at an expected rate of approximately 12 hours per week). 50% of this for a half time (50% or 0.50 FTE) position.
